Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Rennerdale, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing comes with a nationwide network of testing centers. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the scalp or body is required. Hair tests are customizable, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. They serve entities with zero-tolerance policies against drug use and those under probation. The major advantage of hair testing is its extended 90-day detection window, utilizing an observed collection method, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair that is growing. When obtained near the scalp, hair can showcase a detection span extending up to about 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. The hair collection process is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, constituting the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, extra tests, and/or panels beyond 10, a sample size of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not attainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The primary stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This includes confirming that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in court. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation of preliminarily positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can reflect a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
