Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Reserve Township, Pennsylvania. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing facilities available in numerous cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These hair tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly common in recent years for drug screening purposes. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals frequently opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with stringent drug policies and for individuals under judicial supervision. The key advantage of hair testing lies in its extensive detection period of drug use, spanning up to 90 days. Conducted with direct observation, these tests are nearly foolproof against tampering. For detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, fairly hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are solely speaking of scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes of a drug test result consist of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This entails checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any outstanding data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair from the initial sample is used to prepare for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug examination the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more precise findings.
  • Offers historical perspective: It can illustrate drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Reserve Township, PA, surpasses traditional urine tests by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
