Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Revloc, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field. With numerous centers in all major U.S. cities, we facilitate hair drug testing for either drugs, alcohol, or specially designed hair assessments. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is needed for reliable results.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests are favored over traditional urine tests for their extended detection capabilities. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are choosing this method as it aligns with zero-tolerance drug protocols. These tests have a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under observation to prevent tampering. For detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a long-lasting record of alcohol and drugs, as biomarkers get encased within the strands while they grow. When collected from the scalp area, hair samples can reveal alcohol and drug history extending up to around three months. It's easy to collect hair samples, they are relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send off for testing.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands—akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil—nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, it's suggested to use 150mg of the sample. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" denotes all other hair types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in a lab setting are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of logging a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data that isn't included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for detecting drugs. Although it's an economical approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legality. Samples that test positive in Screening need further verification through a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, thus making hair drug screening notably tricky to conduct.

Confirmation of presumptive positive results employs techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo a wash before confirmation, if needed. The complete lab process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—adheres to reviews under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Capable of identifying drug use for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests' shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are extremely tough to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug usage.
  • Cost: Generally pricier than other drug screening techniques.
  • Variations in results: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
