Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Rew, PA. For those requiring drug or alcohol screenings, we specialize in hair assessments and operate testing centers across the nation. An inch and a half to two inches of hair is typically needed from the scalp or body. Our hair assessments are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, the hair follicle method has become a more common drug testing approach. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts increasingly opt for hair testing over urine tests. Organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals under supervision utilize these tests due to their extended detection timeframe, which can cover up to 90 days, collected under careful observation to prevent tampering. Although, for recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain the accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol use. The inclusion of biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand allows hair to offer a detailed record of alcohol and other drugs. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples potentially positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher expenses compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: While sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
