Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing in Reynolds Heights, Pennsylvania. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and has centers throughout all cities nationwide to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing purposes.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation often utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window—typically up to 90 days—being collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to alter. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands akin to the size of a #2 pencil, close to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferred. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick examination for substances of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to rule out substance usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples with presumptive positive findings during Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is obtained from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing presents the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive findings during Screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair code and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notoriously difficult to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption data: It shows a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
