Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Riverside, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty is hair testing with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing options.

In recent times, the approach to drug testing has increasingly involved hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, legal courts, and probationers. A significant advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to alter results. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are gathered near the scalp, they can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and conveniently transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) clipped nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be substituted. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in laboratory processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched properly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial rapid assessment is performed to identify drug use. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptability. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a specimen be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to alter, ensuring greater accuracy in the results.
  • Chronological data: Offers a pattern of drug intake over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, yet the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the scalp-embedded follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
