Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rupert, Pennsylvania. Our centers nationwide provide specialized hair and alcohol testing services. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary for testing. Our analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options, making our solutions adaptable to diverse needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for substance testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair over urine tests for their zero-tolerance policies. The major advantage lies in the extensive detection period of up to 90 days, facilitated by observed sample collection, minimizing tampering risks. However, when assessing recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing has evolved, becoming a significant method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. It provides an extended timeline of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair has the potential to reveal substance use for up to a 3-month period. It is straightforward to collect, comparatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. In cases involving EtG, additional tests, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses facial, axillary, and other hair types.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Therefore, samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this step, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations much lower than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, presenting hair drug screening as a more challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to cheat, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insights: This method provides insights into a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Rupert, PA, hair follicle testing prevails over traditional urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
