Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rural Valley, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this specialty and boasts testing facilities nationwide, including Rural Valley. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary for testing. Hair samples can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. A number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer this method over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and probation authorities. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, ranging up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and offering resistance to tampering. Conversely, for usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand, providing a long-term history of alcohol and other substances. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately 90 days for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be substituted. Note that when we refer to head hair, it strictly means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory process for a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system, which includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective approach to dismiss drug consumption on the majority of samples, any positive result must be confirmed to ensure court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This process involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing more complex.

To confirm any positive screening result, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Documents historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over an extended duration, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referenced as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rural Valley, PA, hair follicle testing stands out by offering a superior detection accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. The extended window of detection elevates hair testing as the method of choice for true, long-term insight into substance use.

Why choose hair testing? Hair samples remain viable for much longer and are less prone to tampering, making them a more dependable option. Conversely, urine tests are easily influenced and provide a shorter detection timeline.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing in Rural Valley, PA, the extended detection window stretches up to 90 days. This ensures employers receive a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, far surpassing the time-span available with urine tests.

Unlike traditional methods, the long-term detection capability of hair testing allows employers to screen potential hires or current employees for sustained substance usage, crucial for roles demanding consistent sobriety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle test design in Rural Valley, PA, significantly reduces the risk of tampering, ensuring that results are reliable and verifiable. This provides an uncompromised picture of an individual's substance usage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
