Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Sabinsville, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in performing hair tests, with centers available in every city Nationwide. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is typically required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug testing. This method is often required by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle tests. Its foremost advantage is the extended detection period, often up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, and its difficulty to fake. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month window for identifying drugs and alcohol use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) obtained closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and validation. For EtG testing, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The key steps in the laboratory processing of drug test samples include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and accurately shipped, generating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples suspected to be positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon receiving a presumptively positive Screening result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to be prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other approaches such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most challenging to implement.

Verification of positive Screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumably positive samples are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Complexity to falsify: It is extremely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Records historical usage: It reveals drug consumption trends over time, beyond just recent use.

Disadvantages:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to register in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing forms.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences may influence the concentration of drug residues within hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
