Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sardis, Pennsylvania. Whether your need is for a drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is backed by a network of testing centers spread across every major city nationwide. In most scenarios, hair from the crown of your head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, can be used. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing in recent years. The preference for this method over standard urine tests is evident among many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse authorities. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationers are opting for hair drug tests due to their significant advantage: a prolonged detection period, often up to 90 days, collected through observation, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most effective for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substances by securing biomarkers within the growing strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can yield an up to 3-month detection period for substances. It is easy to procure, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp equals 100mg—an optimal sample size for both screening and confirming. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair pertains to other types, including facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The key steps in lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of logging a sample into a lab's system. This includes checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves conducting a rapid check for drug presence. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen result needs subsequent confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In scenarios where a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more challenging technique.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirm any positive screen results. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guideline and accreditation complying with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which cover a shorter duration.
  • Hard to deceive: It's quite challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Gives historical insight: It demonstrates a pattern of substance use over time, not merely the latest occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
