Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania. Whether it’s for drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing ensures reliable results. Our centers are located nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. We provide hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom options.

In the past few years, hair follicle testing for drugs has become more common. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests instead of urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies prefer hair testing due to its longer detection span, lasting up to 90 days, collected through an observed procedure, and hard to tamper with. A urine test is still most effective for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and substance use by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's beneficial to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers explicitly to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, appointing a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data record entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening entails a preliminary check for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to stand up in court. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need a further confirmation step.

If a presumptive positive arises during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to implement.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes rigorous review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differ, impacting drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
