In Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is essential, our expertise in hair testing, along with a network of testing centers across cities Nationwide, ensures accessibility. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Whether it's analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing, we've got you covered.

Recently, the practice of using hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary supervision rely on hair follicle tests. Notably, these tests provide a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, involve a supervised collection process, and are extremely challenging to tamper with. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. By encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it provides a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use over a span of around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. The use of a jeweler's scale is recommended for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not an option, an equal volume of body hair can serve as a substitute. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The main phases in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially incorporated into the laboratory's system. This process involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data tasks not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening step involves a preliminary examination for illicit drugs. Although Screening is economically efficient for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples that test positive in Screening undergo further verification.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive initially are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The end-to-end laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeline.
  • High integrity: It is extremely challenging to falsify hair test results, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It demonstrates a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited to past use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
