Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sewickley Heights, Pennsylvania. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with centers across all cities nationwide that perform hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized analysis.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation prefer these tests. The main advantage is the prolonged detection period, reaching up to 90 days, performed under observation, minimizing tampering. However, urine tests remain superior when detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug activity by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can present approximately a three-month period for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analysis, or beyond 10-panel tests, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, this specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result typically involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional record input not already provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs. Although it's an economical means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be legally valid. All samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair mandate and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can discern drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are very challenging to fake, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, unlike recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
