Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shade Gap, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our company excels in this testing method. We have testing centers located throughout cities across the country where such tests can be conducted. Typically, samples require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer it to the traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary monitoring often rely on hair follicle testing. The chief advantage of this method is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, with the sample collection being supervised, making it nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers an extended history of substance use over time. When taken near the scalp, hair can show usage for up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. Head hair strictly refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four key steps in processing a drug test result in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating a sample into a lab's system with care. This entails checking the sample's seal and shipment accuracy, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and filling in any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it's a cost-efficient way to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal validity. Presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If the Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Minimal chances of manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, thus increasing result reliability.
  • Provides a usage timeline: Offers a pattern of substance usage spanning a duration, not limited to recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing costs more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Shade Gap, PA, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering more accurate detection rates, consistently proving its superior reliability. Unlike urine tests, which only indicate recent use, hair tests provide a longer usage history.

The comprehensive detection window of up to 90 days gives employers a detailed look into someone's substance use patterns, offering a clear advantage over conventional methods.

Extended Detection Window

Shade Gap, PA sees the benefits of hair follicle tests, which offer an extended detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days. This longer window allows employers to gain a fuller understanding of a potential hire or employee's substance history, revealing patterns not captured by shorter-term tests.

With this enhanced detection period, employers can make better-informed decisions regarding candidate employability or current employee substance habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
