Accredited Drug Testing furnishes comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Slovan, Pennsylvania. When seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing experts in hair evaluations and operates centers nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for the test. Hair tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for different options.

Recently, drug testing approaches increasingly incorporate hair follicle tests. Several employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors prefer hair drug tests over standard urine analysis. Hair follicle tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, court directives, and individuals on probation by offering extended drug detection—up to 90 days—and are notoriously difficult to deceive. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is acknowledged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair's fibers as it grows. When clipped near to the scalp, it can offer roughly a three-month window of detection for drugs and alcohol. Hair samples are easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hairs (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100 mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions or more than 10 panel tests, 150 mg of specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hairs (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary procedures involved in processing a drug test in a laboratory setting comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, which involves incorporating a sample into the laboratory system. It includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that is not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary test for detecting substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage from the majority of samples, any positive result needs further confirmation to be valid in legal scenarios. Any samples that indicate positive in Screening need a subsequent verification.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are separated from the hair at concentrations lower than other standard methods (like urine or saliva), which makes hair drug testing particularly demanding.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned thoroughly. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is highly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over a prolonged duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
