Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in South Bethlehem, PA. Specializing in hair testing, our centers operate nationwide to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is generally needed. Our analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified testing requirements.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent for drug testing. Organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse consultants now opt for this method over standard urine tests. Utilized by employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probation officers, hair testing offers an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, is conducted under supervision, and is highly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a historical record of drugs and alcohol by encasing biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. When acquired near the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection range of up to 3 months for substances. Hair is easy to gather, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for initial screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to initially recording a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is economical to exclude drug usage in several samples, confirming a positive screen is necessary for legal credibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should the sample test positive during the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial specimen undergoes preparation for Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at concentrations considerably lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing the most challenging procedure.

Positive screening confirmations are pursued using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All presumptive positives receive a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation gets reviewed according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can ascertain drug usage for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a limited detection window.
  • Tough to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring the accuracy of results.
  • Presents historical insight: It indicates a timeline of drug use over the course of months instead of recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs become apparent in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
