Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in South Williamsport, PA. For your hair drug or alcohol testing needs, we're experts in hair analyses and have facilities across the U.S. capable of conducting these tests. About 1.5-2 inches of head or body hair is typically required. Our analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing options.

Nowadays, drug tests often include hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts opt for this over the typical urine test. Hair tests are chosen by zero-tolerance employers, the courts, and probationers. The main advantage is its extended detection period of around 90 days, observed collection method, and difficulty to manipulate. Yet for drugs used within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair fibers encapsulate biomarkers within them, thus offering an extended timeline of substance usage history. If trimmed near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for a period reaching approximately three months. Its collection is straightforward, it's relatively resistant to tampering, and shipping is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) nearest the scalp, yields roughly 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the event scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key four steps in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating the sample into a lab's system at the outset. This stage verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not addressed by an e-chain of custody.

Screening entails an expedited preliminary check for abused substances. Although screening can efficiently exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive result is needed for legal proceedings. Samples suspected to yield positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples during Screening prompt additional hair extraction from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

A confirmed positive result in any Screening is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire process aligns with the CAP's (College of American Pathologists') Hair designation standards and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug examinations can trace drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a smaller timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: Tampering with a hair drug examination is notably challenging, hence delivering more credible results.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a usage pattern over time, as opposed to capturing only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Detecting drugs in hair typically requires a period of 5-7 days.
  • Costs: Hair drug examinations generally incur higher expenses compared to other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and growth differences among individuals can affect metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer as the test assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
