Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening in Spring Grove, PA. Specialized in hair testing, we provide services across all cities Nationwide, including Spring Grove. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for sampling. Our hair tests cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom test options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug testing protocols over traditional methods. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer these tests over urine analyses. These tests interest zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probationers because of their extensive detection window of up to 90 days, their observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. Still, when detecting recent usage, urine tests remain preferable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal specimen for analysis and validation. For additional EtG, extended panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow in determining a drug test outcome includes four significant steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary intake of a specimen into the lab's system. This phase includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing other relevant information entry that might not be available electronically.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for illicit substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples showing positive screening results must undergo further confirmation analysis.

For samples indicating presumptive positive outcomes in Screening, extra hair is harvested from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair in significantly smaller concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug analysis a complex procedure.

Any positive screening results are verified using technologies such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical usage insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage rather than just indicating recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
