Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider for comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Spring Hill, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you seek, Accredited Drug Testing has the expertise in hair analysis, with facilities available throughout all U.S. cities to conduct the examination. For the test, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body usually suffices. The hair can be scrutinized for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored test selections.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been employed as a drug-screening approach. Many companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists demand hair drug tests over traditional urine exams. Such tests are sought by businesses enforcing strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers. The significant advantage is its prolonged detection span, extending up to 90 days, with samples taken under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for testing recent substance usage within the last five days, a urine test remains highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are now recognized as an effective strategy for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strands. By gathering hair near the scalp, it can reveal data up to about three months for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and hassle-free to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG expansions and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, collecting 150mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be sourced. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (face, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in the lab processing of drug test outcomes encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process verifies the sample's sealing and shipment integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any supplementary data not accompanied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial brisk drug check. While Screening efficiently rules out drug usage in the majority of specimens, court-admissible cases require confirmation of any positive screens. Samples presumptively positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in methodologies like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening uniquely challenging to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation, if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can identify drug usage up to a 90-day span, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter timeline.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to compromise, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Illustrates usage patterns: This method reveals a timeline of drug use, not just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing costs are generally higher compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
