In Spring House, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services. Our specialization in hair testing allows us to conduct hair drug or alcohol assessments at our nationwide network of centers, including local options. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required either from the scalp or body to facilitate drug or customized alcohol/ETG testing.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in recent years, often replacing traditional urine tests. Employment screeners, judicial bodies, and substance abuse consultants prefer hair testing for its stringent accuracy and longer detection window. Compared to standard urine tests, hair tests provide up to 90 days of drug use visibility and involve monitored collection, complicating any attempts at tampering. However, for immediate past use within five days, urine tests still offer the best precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair offers a long-term overview of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair provides a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair signifies all other types (face, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in a lab's drug test process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples assumed positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening a highly challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are washed before Confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It's highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical data provision: It indicates patterns of drug consumption over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: There's a delay of about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
