Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we excel in this area, with testing sites available nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the scalp or body. Hair tests are analyzable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer it over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers increasingly rely on hair tests. Its main advantage is a longer detection window up to 90 days, with an overseen collection method that is highly resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent use, up to 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assays have emerged as an effective means to identify substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands retain a lengthy history of alcohol and miscellaneous drugs by capturing biomarkers within their fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, the strands can offer up to approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and various drugs. The collection process is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch collection of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Our reference to head hair solely pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of analyzing a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in processing a sample into a lab's framework. This step confirms that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data recording not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it’s an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive result in Screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. This stage involves the extraction of drugs from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid). As a result, hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Each presumptively positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection period, hair drug analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to falsify, ensuring more precise results.
  • Chronic usage data: This test reveals patterns of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing tends to be more expensive compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually involves examining the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Spring Mills, PA, choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests provides several advantages. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and reliability, capturing a longer window of substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
