In St. Petersburg, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing and provides testing centers across numerous cities nationwide that can administer hair tests. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more common in recent times for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, the court system, and probation services. One key advantage of hair follicle drug tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended period, typically up to 90 days, under direct observation, making them nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a historical record for these substances by preserving biomarkers within hair strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug presence for a window of roughly 3 months. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" here means only scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test outcome includes four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming the seal and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening acts as a preliminary check for substance abuse. It's a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, though a positive result requires verification to be valid in legal situations. Any samples that presumptively test positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug analysis more complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criterion and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests detect drugs for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to circumvent: Hair tests are difficult to falsify, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can illustrate a habitual pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other test types.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine tests in St. Petersburg, PA, the advantages become apparent. Hair testing offers greater accuracy and reliability, capturing drug use over a longer timeline. Unlike urine tests, which only detect recent drug use, hair follicle testing provides a window of up to 90 days.
This extended detection period makes hair testing ideal for consistent drug policy enforcement, providing comprehensive insight into drug habits.

Urine tests are often vulnerable to manipulation, whereas hair tests offer a more definitive solution, making them a superior choice for a trustworthy screening process.
For employers seeking to uphold zero-tolerance drug policies, hair testing delivers a more comprehensive overview, ensuring workplace safety and compliance with established standards.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing in St. Petersburg, PA, offers an unmatched detection window, capable of identifying drug use over a substantial period, up to 90 days. This extended timeframe enables employers to gain deeper insights into substance use patterns or histories, which can be crucial in making informed employment decisions.
Unlike other testing methods, the extended reach of hair analysis provides a more thorough evaluation of an individual’s drug use history.

Such expansive detection offers a distinct advantage, especially in assessing long-term drug habits. It allows organizations to ensure that their employees adhere to substance standards consistently.
Employers benefit from hair testing's extended observation range, making it a central part of maintaining a drug-free work environment, essential for safeguarding productivity and safety in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The integrity of hair follicle testing in St. Petersburg, PA, is established by its resistance to tampering, offering an authoritative advantage over other testing methods. The risk of sample adulteration is significantly mitigated, as hair samples are challenging to manipulate improperly.
This reliability ensures that the results are beyond reproach, making the testing process trustworthy for both test administrators and participants.

Through a method that operates under strict observation and adherence to protocols, hair testing delivers results that stakeholders can rely upon with full confidence. This confidence stems from the controlled nature of the collection process and analysis of hair samples.
The outcome is a more secure approach to drug testing that provides unquestionable data and supports the enforcement of drug-free workplace initiatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
