In Strasburg, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this method, with centers available in cities across the country. Generally, a sample should include 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or other parts of the body. This method tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted over the years. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for this method rather than the traditional urine test. It's particularly advantageous for those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, or individuals on probation, due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, rigorous collection process, and its resistance to tampering. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol presence for roughly three months. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, optimal for analysis. For extensive screenings like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. When scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for common drugs. Although Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Presumptive positive samples in Screening demand secondary verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This procedure extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid testing, which positions hair testing as one of the more challenging methodologies.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It uncovers drug use trends over time rather than just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days post-ingestion to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assay evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
