In Strodes Mills, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we are proficient in hair analysis with testing facilities across various cities nationwide ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used for hair analysis, suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

Recently, more organizations are opting for hair follicle drug testing to screen for substance use. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly requesting hair tests instead of standard urine tests. Companies with zero-drug tolerance, judicial systems, and individuals under probation rely on this method. The main advantage is a longer detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that’s difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain preferable for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can provide a detection span of roughly 3 months for alcohol and substances. Hair is easy to obtain, harder to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp gathers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional examinations, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent volume of body hair might be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other types of hair (such as facial, body, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the early processing of a sample into a lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for illegal substances. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug usage on the majority of samples, a screen yielding positive results necessitates verification to be accepted in legal contexts. Any specimens that are tentatively positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as required. The full laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for an interval of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter assessment period.
  • Difficulty of deception: It is challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over a drawn-out period, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies may influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in Strodes Mills, PA by offering superior detection capabilities. This method detects substances effectively, providing accurate and dependable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
