Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sturgeon, Pennsylvania. Those in need of a drug or alcohol hair test are well supported by Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair testing, we provide services nationwide with centers located in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from either the crown of the head or the body for testing. Our analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle examinations. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly demand these tests over traditional urine analyses. Such tests benefit employers with strict drug-free policies and courts monitoring individuals on probation. A significant advantage of hair follicle testing is that it extends the detection window for drug usage, covering up to 90 days. The collection process is observed and tamper-proof. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a detailed retrospective of substance consumption by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing strand. When procured near the scalp, hair reveals a potential 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG assessments, additional panels, or examinations beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It is best to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be obtained. Note that "head hair" specifically refers to the scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab's system. The sample's proper sealing and shipment are verified, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody system is completed.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the toughest method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive result from Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to tamper: It's exceedingly difficult to fraudulently pass a hair drug test, thereby ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: Offers a chronology of drug intake over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
