At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Summerhill, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise is in hair analyses, with test centers available in cities nationwide to conduct these assessments. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or body hair, is usually required. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specific hair testing services.

The popularity of hair follicle testing for drug analysis has surged in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations and judicial systems with no-drug policies, and probation officers, often mandate these tests. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its longer detection span, reaching up to 90 days, with results obtained under supervision, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, urine remains the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through incorporating biomarkers into the fiber matrix of the hair, it offers insight into substance use over an extended period. When hair from near the scalp is collected, it can reveal substance use information for up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for initial testing and verification. For EtG, additional substances, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The primary stages of laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves registering a sample into a lab system. This step entails confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing additional data input not provided by an e-chain of custody.

Screening acts as an initial evaluation for substance abuse. Though cost-effective for negating drug use in most cases, a positive Screening requires validation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive require further confirmation.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is used for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or saliva, underscoring the challenge of hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is vetted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are more limited in duration.
  • Testing integrity: The complex nature of hair testing makes it resistant to tampering, enhancing accuracy.
  • Insight over time: The results provide a comprehensive overview of substance habits rather than recent use alone.

Drawbacks:

  • Delay in detection: Hair tests require approximately 5-7 days to reflect drug use.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and growth rate may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", it is important to understand these tests assess the strand rather than the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing is increasingly favored over urine tests in Summerhill, PA, due to its superior detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing offers a longer detection window, capturing drug usage over 90 days. This allows for comprehensive analysis of an individual's substance history, providing more reliable insights for employers and officials enforcing drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Summerhill, PA, up to 90 days, gives employers a thorough overview of an individual's past substance use. This prolonged detection period is crucial for understanding long-term habits, unlike the shorter window offered by urine tests, thus presenting a fuller picture of an employee or applicant's history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Summerhill, PA, hair follicle tests offer a significant advantage due to their tamper-resistant nature, effectively reducing the risk of sample adulteration. With a meticulous collection process, the likelihood of cheating or contaminating samples is dramatically decreased, ensuring that results remain trustworthy and undeniable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
