For comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Summerville, PA, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our centers are situated nationwide, ready to meet your testing needs. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly supplemented traditional methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair over urine due to stricter drug use policies. Their advantage is a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, observed sampling, and resistance to test manipulation. Despite this, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting recent, within-5-day drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber during its growth. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over approximately a 90-day period. Collection is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes every other type (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves these four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure where a sample is entered into the lab's workflow. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any required data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to detect drug abuse. While Screening is an economical method to largely eliminate negative samples, any presumptive positive result must be confirmed to be court admissible. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration significantly lower than with alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive screening results. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screens can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Enhances accuracy: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can map drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect new usages quickly: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to appear in hair after usage.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Attributes like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The procedure is often called "hair follicle tests", but it analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
