Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Summit Station, PA. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialization in hair testing is available across numerous nationwide centers. Adequate hair, typically 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body, is necessary for the majority of tests. Options to analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests are available.

The trend of relying on hair follicle drug tests has grown in recent years. Employers, legal systems, and professionals treating substance abuse often prefer hair drug testing over the traditional urine method. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently utilize these tests. Hair follicle testing's primary advantage is a longer drug detection window, approximately 90 days, with highly observable sample collection, making it difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for testing and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we say head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing lab process comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning stage, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid check for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screening result must be validated to be court-admissible. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a tentative positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this step, drugs are separated from the hair at a concentration considerably lower than in alternative techniques (for instance, urine or oral fluid), indicating why hair drug testing is the most complex method to carry out.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can discover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine exams which present a shorter detection time frame.
  • Difficult to fake: It is exceptionally tough to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a record of drug intake over time, not merely recent usage.

Constraints:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may affect the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
