Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Susquehanna Depot, Pennsylvania. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair testing, providing multiple testing locations in cities nationwide where hair tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly favor this over standard urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and for monitoring probationers. This method's key advantage is its extended detection period for drug usage, lasting up to 90 days, with the test monitored and difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximately 3-month observation period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to adulteration, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be gathered, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process confirms that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening offers an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any affirmative screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with potential positive results undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entirety of the laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that possess a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can show a pattern of drug utilization over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
