Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Susquehanna, PA, Accredited Drug Testing is your trusted partner for hair drug and alcohol analysis. Our expertise in hair testing spans all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for a sample, suitable for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair analysis options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have emerged as a popular method in drug screening. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation officials frequently utilize hair tests. This test's advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to deceive. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a powerful tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term overview of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can deliver up to an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system, involving verification that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial rapid test for drugs of abuse. While a cost-effective strategy to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to stand in court. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For a sample presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, offering a longer period than urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over a duration of time, instead of just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Susquehanna, PA, hair follicle testing is often preferred over urine tests due to its enhanced detection capability. Hair tests offer longer detection windows and greater accuracy. This makes them invaluable for employers and institutions aiming for higher reliability in drug use detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
