Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Taylorstown, Pennsylvania. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, we have facilities nationwide where these tests can be conducted. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed for analysis. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often choose hair tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services prefer these tests due to their extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days. The observed nature of sample collection offers security against tampering, though for recent drug use detection under 5 days, urine tests are more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has established itself as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It furnishes a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The process of gathering hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement of the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be taken. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for obtaining a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the primary step for integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This procedure entails ensuring the sample's correct sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any supplementary data input that isn’t managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial cursory examination for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result mandates confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. All samples that test presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positives during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration level than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, adheres to the guidelines set forth by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection time frame.
  • Challenges in falsification: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a timeline of drug use across a span, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs relative to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Taylorstown, PA, offers clear advantages over standard urine tests. This method ensures superior detection accuracy and reliability, proving especially beneficial for long-term substance use examination. With hair testing, the opportunity for inconsistent results and sample tampering is dramatically reduced, providing trustworthy insights into an individual's drug history.

Unlike more traditional urine tests, hair follicle drug screening is excellent for identifying substance use over an extended time. Employers can rely on these tests to reflect an individual's consistent lifestyle choices rather than capturing a single moment, offering a strong basis for informed decisions regarding hiring and workplace safety policies.

Extended Detection Window

One of the major benefits of hair follicle testing in Taylorstown, PA, is its extended detection window. Unlike other methods, hair testing can reveal drug use over the past 90 days. This comprehensive view allows employers to gain a more profound insight into an individual's substance habits, helping to inform important employment decisions.

Employers looking to understand a prospective or current employee’s long-term drug use find value in hair follicle testing. By providing a window into three months of drug activity, this method paints a clearer picture of a person's consistent behavior, making it an innovative tool in maintaining workplace safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Taylorstown, PA, significantly curtails the possibility of sample adulteration. This reliability stems from the inherent properties of hair samples, which make it challenging to interfere with the test's accuracy. As a result, hair follicle tests provide assured and credible results, building trust in the testing process.

Sample integrity is a key advantage of hair follicle tests over other methods. With observed collection procedures and inherent resistance to tampering, these tests deliver reliable insights, ensuring that both employers and legal entities receive accurate and uncontestable results, thereby supporting confident decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
