Located in Terre Hill, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in these tests and maintain facilities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Hair analysis options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among others.

Hair follicle drug tests have become more common in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer them over standard urine tests. These tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation services. The advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window that can span up to 90 days, accomplished through an observed, secure collection method, minimizing manipulation attempts. However, for drug usage in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term histories of alcohol and various substances by sequestering biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we indicate only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s procedures. This entails making sure the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to discard drug use in most instances, any result marked positive initially needs verification to be court-admissible. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening do necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at notably lower concentrations when compared to other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive from the screening phase is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: It's extremely challenging to alter a hair drug test, ensuring results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a drug use trend over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Terre Hill, PA, surpasses urine testing in identifying drug use. Hair tests offer superior detection over longer durations, making them indispensable for organizations with strict drug policies. Unlike urine tests, which cover a limited timeframe, hair tests provide a broader view of an individual's substance history.

The accuracy of hair testing gives it an edge over traditional urine methods. Its robust detection capabilities make it difficult for users to manipulate outcomes. Therefore, entities that prioritize accuracy opt for hair over urine testing to maintain integrity in their testing practices.

Extended Detection Window

In Terre Hill, PA, hair follicle tests are favored for their long detection window, covering up to 90 days. This extensive timeframe provides an exhaustive view of a person's substance usage history, aiding employers in making well-informed employment decisions based on more comprehensive data than what urine tests offer.

Employers can benefit from this extended detection period as it helps evaluate both current and past substance habits, ensuring they hire individuals who meet their drug-free workplace requirements. With this longer history, workplace safety and reliability are effectively maintained.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Terre Hill, PA, offers a tamper-resistant method to assess drug use. This type of testing minimizes the risk of sample alteration, thereby delivering results that can be fully trusted. Employers and authorities seeking reliable data often use this method for its accuracy and integrity.

The nature of hair testing makes it inherently resistant to tampering, as opposed to urine tests, which can be more prone to adulteration. Utilizing hair samples for testing ensures the collection process yields incontrovertible and robust results, enhancing trust in the findings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
