Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug assessments in Thornburg, Pennsylvania. For individuals requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in these tests and have locations in all cities nationwide that can conduct hair testing. It generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head, though body hair may also be used. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly popular method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probation officers often select this method. The significant advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is nearly impossible to compromise, unlike urine tests which are better for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has evolved into an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term alcohol and drug use history by embedding biomarkers within its growing fibers. If taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window spanning up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In situations where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair only, and body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result must be verified to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening require a secondary verification.

In cases where a sample is presumed positive at the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically require 5-7 days post-use to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
