Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Tinicum Township, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in this field, with testing facilities across all U.S. cities capable of conducting such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically sufficient for this analysis. Hair tests can be tailored to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Numerous companies, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation monitors, often select this testing method. The chief advantage is its extended detection timeframe, which can span up to 90 days, secure observation during sample collection, and reduced susceptibility to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use detected within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term overview of alcohol and drug use by securing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can present up to a roughly 3-month window for identifying alcohol and drug use. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for precise weight measurement. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all alternative types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab's drug test evaluation comprises four essential phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's infrastructure. This step involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid inspection for substance abuse. While Screening is an economical means to preclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires validation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration compared to other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is a particularly challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is supervised in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, as opposed to merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
