Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive drug testing via hair follicle analysis in Trees Mills, Pennsylvania. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with locations throughout the country ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation agencies choose hair follicle tests for their comprehensive detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation to prevent cheating. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By trapping biomarkers within the growing strands, hair delivers an extensive history of alcohol and drug use. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers up to about a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Hair is uncomplicated to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main procedures in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab system, involving verification that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial quick check for drug abuse indications. While screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be legally defensible. Any samples that indicate a presumptive positive result in Screening need second-level confirmation.

If a sample results in a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at decreased concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleaned prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The full process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designations and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection duration.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It is exceptionally challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Chronological data provision: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides superior long-term detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests in Trees Mills, PA. While urine tests are effective for short-term drug use identification, hair tests offer a more extended detection window.

By analyzing hair samples, the precision and reliability of this method surpass urine tests, making it a preferred choice for thorough drug screening policies, offering advantages in detecting past substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Trees Mills, PA, hair follicle testing excels with its extended detection window, capturing drug use history up to 90 days. This comprehensive timeframe offers a clear look into an individual's substance habits.

For employers seeking a deeper understanding of an applicant or employee's drug use, hair analysis provides a broad historical view that urine tests can't match, offering crucial insights into behavioral patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Trees Mills, PA, significantly reduces the risk of sample adulteration. These tests yield reliable and unquestionable results, ensuring integrity.

Hair tests are collected under strict observation and difficult to alter, promoting accuracy. This feature makes them an invaluable tool for organizations prioritizing certainty and trust in testing results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
