Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Trout Run, Pennsylvania. Need a hair drug or alcohol screening? Our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide facilities capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Our hair tests can assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing solutions.

Over recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has risen significantly. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer them over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation entities often adopt hair drug tests due to their extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly foolproof and observeable collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it can offer a drug and alcohol detection duration of up to three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any extra data not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial expedited assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical approach for negating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is sourced from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a testament to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo requisite washing before confirmation. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect use over a shorter period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the credibility of the results.
  • Chronicles past use: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
