Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Trucksville, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, be assured that Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair examinations. We have facilities in all cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific hair analysis options.

Recently, drug-testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle assays. Many employers, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests instead of conventional urine screenings. Employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and those on probation often use hair follicle drug tests. Their key advantage is a longer detection span for drug use, typically up to 90 days. The test is gathered in a monitored process and is almost impossible to fake. Despite this, urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has emerged as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present a detection period extending to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat tricky to tamper with, and easy to dispatch.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We advocate weighing the specimen with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process within the lab for processing a drug test outcome involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab system. This entails confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug consumption in many samples, yet a positive screen must be affirmed for court admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is withdrawn from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests monitor drug use up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenge to undermine: It's exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Yields historical patterns: It renders a drug usage distribution over time, not merely recent episodes.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly identified as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation concentrates on the hair strand, not the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
