Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tylersville, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers located nationwide, including all major cities, ready to conduct such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or other body parts is necessary. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle drug testing. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is used by organizations with strict drug policies, legal courts, and individuals on probation due to its longer drug detection period of up to 90 days, its observed and reliable collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an efficient means to identify alcohol and drug use. The hair retains biomarkers within its strands, providing an extended history of drug and alcohol use. Hair samples taken close to the scalp offer the potential to detect substances consumed over a period of up to three months. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is convenient to transport.

A clip of hair measuring 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), is typically required to produce 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For testing beyond 10 panels or for EtG, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to determine the specimen's weight. If scalp hair cannot be provided, an equivalent quantity of body hair may suffice. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four crucial phases in the laboratory processing chain for drug testing, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is introduced into the lab's system. This involves checking the condition of the sample to ensure proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment aimed at identifying drug abuse. While Screening is economically effective for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive outcomes must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, further hair from the original specimen undergoes preparation for Extraction. At this stage, drug concentration in hair is detected at much lower levels than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. Each step of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Resistant to falsification: It is challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result fidelity.
  • Historical insight: It presents a timeline of drug usage patterns, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent use: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in growth can alter metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on the hair strand, excluding the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Tylersville, PA

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
