In Union City, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Whether your needs involve testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair specimen collection, with facilities nationwide ready to assist. The requirement typically involves 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair may suffice. Our tests address drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair test solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more preferred method of substance analysis. This test is increasingly demanded by employers, judicial bodies, and addiction specialists as an alternative to urine analysis. Employers enforcing no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationers often select hair tests. A key strength is the extended detection period of drug use, offering up to 90 days of traceability. The process is conducted under observation, reducing the chances of tampering, although urine testing remains the best choice for recent drug use detection within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection span for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, an equal portion of body hair may be collected. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs verification to be permissible in court. Any samples that are presumably positive in Screening do require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumably positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a smaller detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical information: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect current use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Aspects like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Union City, PA, outshines traditional urine tests by offering superior accuracy and dependability. While urine tests detect drug use within a short timeframe, hair tests provide a more detailed analysis thanks to their extended detection period, which captures a broader consumption history.

Employers benefit from hair testing's enhanced reliability, as it minimizes manipulation risks and extends the detection window, providing a more thorough review of potential drug use. This makes it an ideal choice for maintaining robust drug-free policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle tests in Union City, PA, covers up to 90 days, making it an essential tool for employers to assess an individual's substance involvement over time. Unlike other methods, it gives a deeper insight into the consumption patterns.

This increased detection timeframe ensures that employers gain a comprehensive overview of the applicant or employee's drug history, thus assisting in making informed hiring or retention decisions, ultimately promoting a safer working environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Union City, PA, offer a robust deterrent against sample manipulation. The method significantly cuts the risk of tampering, ensuring the integrity of the test results. This reliability is critical for accurate drug history evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
