In Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services for drugs and alcohol. If you're in need of a hair test, our nationwide centers are equipped to conduct these tests efficiently. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances based on specific needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests in recent years. Many workplaces, courts, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for organizations with strict no-drug policies, as well as the legal system and probation officers. They offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making them extremely difficult to alter. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Acknowledged as highly effective, hair testing is an influential means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can supply up to a 3-month time frame for substance detection. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample, comprising about 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Employ a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair not be an option, a comparable quantity of body hair might be gathered. The term 'head hair' solely refers to scalp hair. 'Body hair' denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It entails confirming the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient measure to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

A presumptively positive sample in Screening leads to more hair being extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any initial positive findings is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which has a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: It reveals a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variances in hair color and individual hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the scalp’s hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
