Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Upper Exeter, Pennsylvania. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is known for its expertise in hair testing. With locations available in all cities nationwide, we can conduct a hair test. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair; body hair can be used when necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly featured hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are relied upon by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services. The significant advantage is the extended detection period for drugs, up to 90 days, collected under observation, which is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, when detecting drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair logs a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to adulterate, and easy to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands of hair (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial fast check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a much lower concentration than in alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is implemented via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which possess a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to tamper: It is exceedingly tough to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Yield historical data: It can showcase a pattern of drug use over a timeframe, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Considerations like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Upper Exeter, PA, can be attributed to superior detection accuracy. Hair tests provide a more reliable analysis of substance use over conventional urine tests. The likelihood of evading detection diminishes with hair testing, as it reveals a comprehensive history of drug usage, making it a preferred option for employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
