Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Vandling, Pennsylvania. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers across Nationwide perform hair tests effectively. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically required. Tests may analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. Hair drug tests are often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. This test is crucial for those emphasizing zero-tolerance, such as employers, the judiciary, and monitoring those on probation. Its key advantage is an extended detection window of about 90 days, ensuring uncheatable, observed samples. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective means for identifying substance usage, hair testing offers an extended history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair testing can provide a detection span of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs alike. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, roughly comprising 200 strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil), and nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, deemed optimal for evaluation and affirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advocate weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. “Head hair” denotes only scalp hair, whereas “body hair” encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory processing comprises four chief stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system, ensuring proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening being an economical method for discarding drug usage in a majority of samples, a positive result in Screening necessitates Confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening mandate subsequent Confirmation.

In cases where Screening indicates presumptive positivity, additional hair is drawn from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at notably lower concentrations than found in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is notably demanding.

The Confirmation of any affirmative screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive are washed if needed before Confirmation. The laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subject to scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, offering a broader detection window than urine tests.
  • Challenge to compromise: Hair drug tests are notably hard to falsify, ensuring result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a chronicle of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally involve higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the process evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
