Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Village Shires, Pennsylvania. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing. We have centers across all cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained favor over traditional methods. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests instead of standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers utilize hair follicle tests. These tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring collected samples are almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term evidence of substances by incorporating biomarkers as the hair strand grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month window for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section containing around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Referring to head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the sample’s initial integration into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample’s secure transport, generates a specific LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening provides an affordable means to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal viability. Samples yielding a presumptive positive must undergo a secondary verification.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, an additional hair portion is drawn from the original and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, hair drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening advance to Confirmation, performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, samples testing presumptive positive are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests provide a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably hard to deceive, enhancing accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It uncovers drug use patterns over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Cost implications: Generally, hair drug testing incurs greater costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although occasionally termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
