Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Villanova, Pennsylvania. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing provides expertise in this area, with centers available in cities across the nation to conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing purposes.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair tests over standard urinalysis. Businesses with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services frequently choose hair follicle tests. The main advantage is their detection window for drug use, which extends up to 90 days, is conducted under supervision, and is nearly foolproof. For detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair tests has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical view of alcohol and drug use due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is obtained close to the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, fairly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory's system, which involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in the majority of samples, any positive findings need confirmation to be legitimate for court proceedings. All samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive result in the Screening step, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to carry out.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is performed using either GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use back to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: Capable of showing a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot discern recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Villanova, PA, hair follicle testing offers better accuracy and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. Hair tests provide an extended detection window and are nearly impossible to cheat. While urine tests are effective for recent drug use, hair testing excels in revealing a comprehensive history of substance use over the past three months, making it a preferred choice for employers.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle drug tests sets them apart in Villanova, PA. Unlike urine tests that offer a short-term snapshot, hair testing allows detection of drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This provides employers with a thorough overview of a potential or current employee’s substance use history, crucial for making well-informed hiring or retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
