Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug tests in Virginville, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities in all U.S. cities ready to conduct such tests. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head, though body hair can work too. These hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. A number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of the standard urine tests. These hair follicle tests are employed by employers committed to zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and probation-bound individuals. The standout advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug use detection period, up to 90 days, in a monitored collection setup that's hard to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, considered the optimal sample size for analysis. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg collection is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale for precise weighing of the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we refer strictly to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four essential steps in processing a drug test in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is registered in a lab’s system, ensuring it was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening provides an initial assessment for potential drug presence. While it is cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, confirmed positive results are necessary for legal acceptability. Samples testing presumptively positive require a further confirmation test.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. During this process, drugs are drawn out at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (like urine or oral fluids), hence making hair drug testing a challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny aligned with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug screening can identify drug use for an extended duration up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to manipulation, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over an extended duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: It requires around 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in strands.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strands instead of the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
