Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Walkers Mill, Pennsylvania. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our specialty is in hair analysis, and we possess testing locations in every city across the nation to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Hair tests can provide insights into drug, alcohol/ETG usage, or tailored testing solutions.

Over the past years, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle drug evaluations. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over typical urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are preferred among employers maintaining strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation offices. The main advantage involves the extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making tampering almost impossible. Nonetheless, the urine test remains the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) harvested close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferable. It's advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (face, armpits, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in lab processing for drug testing results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating the sample into the lab's system, ensuring that it's properly sealed and delivered, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to check for drug traces. While it's a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples deemed presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is certified under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which has a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: The results of a hair drug test are highly reliable due to its resistance to cheating.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals long-term drug use patterns instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
