Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Waller, Pennsylvania. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this testing method, with facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting these exams. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be utilized. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over traditional urine analysis for detecting drug use. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts often favor hair drug testing instead of urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, as well as courts and probation services, utilize hair testing. Its primary advantage is an extensive detection timeframe of up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. Nonetheless, for substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers as they grow, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage. When gathered from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to approximately a 3-month detection period for substances. It's easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is an optimal quantity for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional substances, and tests beyond 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of hair. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, where a sample is integrated into the laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample was adequately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an early assessment for illicit substances. It’s a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, though samples testing positive must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Presumptive positives from Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Any positive result from Screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples undergo washing if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the process undergoes scrutiny in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer detection for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High integrity: Cheating on hair drug tests is notably difficult, leading to greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insights: It provides insight into drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Delay in detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rate may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
