Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Washington Boro, Pennsylvania. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug evaluation. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over typical urine analyses. Hair follicle evaluations are opted for by employers upholding non-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and monitored individuals. The chief advantage lies in the prolonged detection span, lasting up to 90 days, collected under observation and giving no room for manipulation. Nevertheless, for substance usage detection within the past five days, urine assessments still prevail in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gives a prolonged timeline of drug and alcohol usage due to the capture of biomarkers in the strands of hair as it grows. When trimmed near the scalp, hair can yield a detection time frame of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to manipulate, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately matching the thickness of a #2 pencil) cut near the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In reference to head hair, it denotes exclusively scalp hair. Body hair incorporates all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening economically eliminates drug use in most samples, a positive outcome must be corroborated for court acceptance. Samples suggesting positivity in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), hence hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Positive results in Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized following both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection span: Hair drug tests uncover drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insights: It tracks a usage pattern of drugs over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting very recent use: Drug traces become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests generally carry a higher cost than other testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis assesses the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
