At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Wellsville, Pennsylvania. If you need testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities available across the nation ready to conduct tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head is needed, or body hair can be utilized. Our hair tests are custom-tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, the trend towards hair follicle drug testing has grown among drug testing methods. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are now opting for this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests appeal to employers enforcing zero-tolerance and are mandated by courts or for those on probation. They offer a prime advantage: a prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, gathered under close supervision, making them nearly foolproof. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine is still favored due to its precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they develop. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate substance usage over a period of up to three months. It is straightforward to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

An ideal sample consists of a 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair for optimal testing. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If head hair is not available, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it exclusively implies scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a specimen within the laboratory's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial, swift check for substance use. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires Confirmation to hold weight legally. Any samples presumed positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive Screening result, additional hair from the initial sample is readied for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair testing particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The whole lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing reveals drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, leading to more trustworthy results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption data.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become evident in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than other testing forms.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal differences in growth can impact metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
