Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Wernersville, Pennsylvania. When a hair or alcohol test is required, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities across cities Nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have evolved to favor hair follicle tests. This approach is increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and for those on probation. The main advantage is the extended drug detection period of approximately 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Conversely, urine tests still lead in accuracy for drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers in its strands. Once gathered near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection span for substance and alcohol identification. Collecting hair is easy, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100 mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or evaluations beyond 10 panels, it's advised to use 150 mg of the specimen. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. For head hair, we solely refer to scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary laboratory steps for processing drug test results are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample in a lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample remains sealed, is correctly shipped, an anonymous LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening consists of a primary rapid assessment for abusive substances. Although Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation for legal credibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from hair at considerably reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening compared to other techniques.

To confirm any positive screening results, methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire processing sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair acknowledgment and certified by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can identify substance use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Challenging to alter: Attempting to manipulate a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, thus ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals use trends: It shows drug consumption patterns over time, not only recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally become recognizable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strands and not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
